Garmin TOPO Switzerland

Berichtdoor waltgallus » 09 feb 2021 14:27

Hi

Montana 680
TOPO Switzerland Pro
http://jdm.javawa.nl/oixv

I am not sure if I am in the right place with my question. If not, I would appreciate any advice.

I am visually impaired and can hardly recognize paths, trails and other details on the device display. I would like to edit them, enlarge (with) them or change the colour. With previous maps I was able to edit and adapt the TYP file; this worked well. With the new TOPO Switzerland Pro maps, this is unfortunately no longer possible. Is there another possibility?

Thanks and regards

There are two different versions of the Topo Switzerland, one with raster maps and one without (the traditional map type). The raster type map looks the same as the old, very detailed paper maps but it is impossible to change the layout. The layout of the other version can be changed by editing the TYP file.
I'm afraid you chose the wrong version...

Thanks very much for your answer. As you can see in
http://jdm.javawa.nl/oixv "Switzerland TOPO Pro" contins 4 maps, the raster you mention and 3 vector maps. I am speeking of the vector maps, especially of the normal PRO and the Winter version. They both do not have the TYP file as earlier Garmin maps did. When I use TypWiz6 I cannot find most of the paths, routes, trails, etc.
Any other/additional idea?
Thanks
Walt

The idea behind this map is that you use the raster map for display, and the underlying vector map for routing. The vector map itself uses the standard rendering that every device uses when there is no TYP file in use. It is possible to create a TYP file yourself, but you have to find out by trial and error which elements are used. A very complex and time consuming job...

Thankd again for your additional informations which I understand very well. I do not use the raster map at all, but only the vector maps. My hope or idea was to manipulate the standard rendering which does not seem to be possible. I tried to create an own TYP file earlier, but it is very cumbersome and laborious. Is it possible to use TYP files from downloaded collections? Will they work together with TOPO Switzerland Pro?

Thanks in advance

You can try that, maybe by comparing the typ files it is faster to learn. Under windows use Notepad++ or WinMerge to compare TYP files.

Make sure you have screenshot from maps before you start editing, so that you can see if there is progress after changing TYP files, sometimes the changed parts are minor.

I found a program can create a typ file for a map that hasn't got one, at least according the description: https://www.pinns.co.uk/osm/img2typ.html
Maybe it can help you creating your own typ file.

Hi Ervaren
Thanks very much for your hint. The proposed tool sounds very good. I have downloaded the demo and the manual and shall report here about my experience. This however will take some time.
Regards
Walt
